STEM Challenges in Marine Biology Class: A “Sweet” Twist on the Classic Phytoplankton Sinking Rate Activity

نویسندگان

چکیده

Over the millennia, phytoplankton have evolved adaptations to reduce sinking rates and increase amount of time they are able stay in photic zone; one such adaptation is increasing form resistance with larger surface areas. Spines, flattened body shape, forming chains, so forth can area slow rates. While there many plankton rate activities accessible on web, this middle high school level laboratory activity modified make data collection easier more reliable, adds a dash STEM engineering challenge. Students first test equal-sized spherical clay ‘plankton’ differing numbers spines see how projections affect rate, then create different shaped challenge be slowest sink. The use corn syrup as ‘ocean’ makes crucial difference from classic race – it allows sink slowly enough that students get good data, represents ocean’s viscosity experienced by plankton. This engaging 5 E’s marine biology oceanography presented your plankton? practice doing science utilize experimental design, math biological predictions, graph analyze evidence defend their conclusions utilizing claim-evidence-reasoning format.

reinsurance is widely recognized as an important instrument in the capital management of an insurance company as well as its risk management tool. this thesis is intended to determine premium rates for different types of reinsurance policies. also, given the fact that the reinsurance coverage of every company depends upon its reserves, so different types of reserves and the method of their calc...

How Do Sinking Phytoplankton Species Manage to Persist? How Do Sinking Phytoplankton Species Manage to Persist?

Phytoplankton requires light for photosynthesis, but most phytoplankton species are heavier than water and sink. How can these sinking species persist? Here we show, by means of an advection-di usion-reaction equation of light-limited phytoplankton, that the answer lies in the turbulent motion of water that re-disperses phytoplankton over the vertical water column. More speci cally, we show tha...

A Veterinary Twist on Pathogen Biology

The recent epidemics of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot and mouth disease, and avian influenza have focused the attention of the general public and scientific community on veterinary pathogens. Studies on naturally occurring infectious diseases of domestic animals, although perceived to be mostly relevant for animal health, have often unveiled new paradigms on the biology of infectious a...
